What is Kosher Sharpening?

Kosher sharpening ensures your knives are sharpened in accordance with halachic (Jewish law) standards. This involves using specific methods and following a meticulous process to not only sharpen your knives but also to ensure they are subsequently treated with the necessary steps to meet kosher standards.

Why does it take an additional 24 hours?

To meet kosher standards, each knife must rest for 24 hours after sharpening before it can be kashered (brought to compliance with kosher standards). We sharpen every knife as soon as it arrives at our facility. For knives requiring kosher certification, since they must rest for 24 hours after sharpening, this extra time is necessary to ensure that the knives can be properly kashered afterward.

How is Kosher Sharpening different from regular sharpening?

The key difference lies in the procedures we follow. Regular sharpening focuses solely on the blade, while kosher sharpening incorporates specific halachic (Jewish law) requirements. This includes using kosher-designated equipment and ensuring that after sharpening, knives rest for 24 hours before being kashered to restore their kosher status. These additional steps are crucial to maintain the knife's compliance with kosher standards.

Who supervises the Kosher Sharpening process?

Kosher sharpening is done under the guidance of Up State Kashrus, led by Harav Yechiel Steinmetz, Shlitah. This ensures that all aspects of the process are fully compliant with kosher standards, giving you peace of mind that your knives are prepared with the utmost care.

Can I use my knives right after they’re sharpened?

Once you receive your knives, they will be fully ready for use immediately. Our thorough sharpening and kashering process ensures that your knives are not only sharpened to perfection but also meet all kosher requirements, so you can confidently use them right away in your kitchen.
